Writing was better than the story.

Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe 

Not sure how to rate this - it's not actually a story but an 1852 political piece dressed as a story. Still, it has intensely effective arguments.

Candide by Voltaire 

The joke got old really, really fast.
